Small Animal Intensive
Care and Recovery Unit (R-ICU)
Our most critical cases are treated in the small animal intensive care
unit, which also serves as an anesthesia and surgery recovery area for the
veterinary teaching hospital.
Over the last 10 years, the R-ICU has developed into one of the best
places for pet care in the country. Our nurses and doctors provide
constant coverage (24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year) for the
animals we treat.
Our Facilities and
Equipment
This area of the hospital was re-designed and expanded in 2004. The
current R-ICU facility has a 52 patient capacity, including runs for large
dogs.
Animals who need oxygen therapy sometimes need to be connected to tubes
and tanks to get the best care. However, we also have two oxygen cages
which provide oxygen supplementation in a safe and non-invasive manner.
These Plexiglas cages are also temperature and humidity controlled to
allow us to maximize patient care and comfort.
Visitors may be surprised by the advanced equipment we use for cats and
dogs. Our doctors have the advantage of programmable intravenous fluid
pumps to deliver precise amounts of medication and fluid therapy. In
addition, we use state-of-the-art equipment to monitor our most critical
patients. Continuous ECG, blood pressure, and body temperature monitoring
equipment help us to recognize and treat problems earlier than ever
before.
