Current Research: Epidemiology of Salmonella spp. in the green iguana
Dr. Mitchell completed his M.S. degree in clinical epidemiology with an emphasis on wildlife and exotic species at the university of Illinois in 1997. He is currently working on a Ph.D. in clinical epidemiology at Louisiana State University.
Dr. Mitchell is a bird, zoo, and exotic animal clinician whose primary interests are reptiles, amphibians, fish, marine mammals, and zoologic species. His primary areas of research include clinical pathology, infectious diseases, nutritional disorders, and drug pharmacokinetics in reptiles and amphibians. He is also working to establish a national clinical database for reptiles.
Dr. Mitchell is the faculty adviser for Wildlife, Avian, Zoo, and Exotic Medicine (WAZEM). This is a club that offers veterinary students exposure to all wildlife and exotic species. In the past year, Dr. Mitchell has expanded the club to include aquatic animal and herpetological medicine.
At LSU, Dr. Mitchell is employed as a Clinical Instructor of Bird, Zoo, and Exotic Medicine. He instructs preclinical veterinary students on ferret, reptile, and amphibian medicine and surgery. He instructs senior veterinary students in bird, zoo, and exotic medicine and surgery.
