Dr. Michael Groves was appointed Dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine in June, 2000. Before coming to LSU SVM, Dr. Groves served from 1964 until 1990 in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps, where he was active in infectious disease research.  His assignments included command of the Army’s research laboratory in Malaysia; director of the Army/Navy consolidated infectious disease program; and Deputy Director of the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research.

Following his retirement from the Army, Dr. Groves joined the faculty of the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, assuming the duties of Head of the Department of Epidemiology & Community Health.  In 1995, the directorship of the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory was added to his responsibilities.

Dr. Groves is Past President of the ACVPM and previously served on the Examinations Committee and Board of Counselors for that organization.  Currently, he serves on the National Board Examinations Committee for veterinary licensing; he is a past chair of that organization.  In addition, Dr. Groves is on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Food Hygiene Veterinarians and is a member of the joint Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Advisory Committee on Microbiological Criteria for Foods.

Research Interests

His interests focus on food safety, risk assessment, interpretation of clinical tests, epidemiologic study design, and the epidemiology of various infectious diseases, including rabies, hantavirus infections, and cat scratch disease.
