Dr. Baker is Director of the Division of Laboratory Animal Medicine. In addition, he is Head of the Department of Comparative Biology at Pennington Biomedical Research Center, and Founding Director of Laboratory Animal Diagnostics, a commercial diagnostic service. Dr. Baker teaches in the 2nd and 3rd year professional curriculum, serves as faculty sponsor for the Student Christian Veterinary Mission and the Student Chapter of the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners, and trains veterinary residents specializing in laboratory animal medicine. Dr. Baker also serves as the personal veterinarian for "Mike" the tiger, LSU's Bengal tiger mascot, and as consulting veterinarian for the East Baton Rouge Parish Animal Control Center. Dr. Baker is current president of the Louisiana branch of the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science.
Research Interests
Dr. Baker's research interests are in the area of diseases of laboratory animals. Current projects include investigating the biology of Helicobacter hepaticus, a bacterial pathogen of laboratory mice. Another study underway involves comparing "spike" protein gene sequences from multiple strains of Sialodacryoadenitis virus, a pathogen of laboratory rats. Lastly, studies are ongoing to develop a rat model of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
