This departments instructional program encompasses the study of pathological aspects of animal diseases of infectious, developmental, toxic, degenerative, and neoplastic nature at both the professional and graduate levels. In the professional curriculum, courses in Year II concentrate on the general host response to injury; the Year IV block covers specific species response to disease factors and includes the practical application of necropsy techniques on cases received from the Veterinary Teaching Hospital & Clinics and the Louisiana Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. Correlation of changes in structure and function with clinical signs is stressed. Advanced studies in the department lead to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in veterinary medical sciences. The departmental faculty provide a variety of services to the school, including clinical pathology, cytology, surgical pathology, and postmortem examination.
