Research Interests
Dr. Morgan is interested in the host inflammatory response to E. coli O157:H7 infection, and the role of the host inflammatory response in the movement of Shiga toxin, produced by E. coli O157:H7, from the intestinal lumen to the systemic circulation. To investigate this response, Dr. Morgan has developed a neonatal pig model of E. coli O157:H7 infection and systemic Shiga toxin-induced damage. By understanding the role of the host inflammatory reaction in mucosal barrier changes that may lead to Shiga toxin translocation, it may be possible to develop preventative measures or treatment protocols to reduce or eliminate the translocation of Shiga toxin and thus prevent the development of Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome, which is the leading cause of acute renal failure in children in the United States.
