Research Interests:

Dr McLaughlin’s initial research interests have focused on cellular stress, heat shock proteins, and the unfolded protein response. In studies using inbred mice, she was able to show wide variations in levels of voluntary wheel running, suggesting possible epigenetic effects on this behavior. In gene array studies comparing high runners with low runners or sedentary mice, however, she showed that there was a downregulation of the endoplasmic reticulum “unfolded protein” response, suggesting that voluntary physical activity reduces stress on the brain, in contrast to its effects on muscle, for example. This reduction in the unfolded protein response suggests that high running mice produce fewer defective proteins. This effect may be integral to the recognized role of physical activity in preventing or delaying the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, Dr McLaughlin’s research interests also include the molecular pathogenesis of neoplasia, more specifically, manipulation of DNA damage and repair mechanisms and how it may affect development of certain types of tumors in inbred and genetically engineered mouse strains.
