Faculty Research Interests

Areas of research interest are outlined for faculty members in the department. Potential applicants are encouraged to contact faculty members directly regarding specific research interests and current programs.

All faculty members participating in this program have research funding attracted through peer-reviewed competition by granting agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Louisiana Educational Quality Support Fund (LEQSF), EPSCOR of the National Science Foundation, private foundations, and cooperation with pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies. Two faculty members have funding from the World Health Organization and the Agency for International Development. Six faculty members have research funding through the Louisiana Agricultural Experiment Station. The research funding in place amounts to $6,104,768 in 1998-1999.

The aim is to expose graduate students to faculty members with active research programs. Emphasis will be placed on educating individuals capable of independent problem identification, hypothesis formulation, and experimental design. The department represents the only institution in the state of Louisiana with the teaching and research capabilities in infectious diseases of animals and the numerous interrelated human diseases. This has been documented in the past training of graduate students with high marketability and success in competing for newly emerging job opportunities.

The expanding problem with human immunodeficiency virus infections or AIDS require investigations on the immune response and pathogenesis in animal models. The re-emergence of tuberculosis in animals and people, newly emerging diseases such as food-borne pathogenic E. coli infections, ehrlichiosis, Lyme disease, chlamydiosis, crytosporidiosis, hantavirus respiratory disease and other respiratory infections, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, and swine mystery disease make headlines in the news as problems to be investigated in both animals and human subjects. Serious aquatic animal disease problems are emerging in the aquaculture industries. Our faculty members are spearheading investigations concerning these problems which have an enormous economic impact on the animal industries and health problems for the human population.The battle against infectious diseases of human subjects and animals calls for improved diagnostic tools and effective means of prevention. Our faculty has the unique combination of talents and research capabilities to investigate contemporary, molecular biological, immunological and biotechnological aspects of infectious organisms, utilizing animal models to test the relevance of molecular findings.

The recent publications of our faculty and graduate students and the list of funded research programs reflect the research opportunities for our graduate students. Some of these activities are summarized in the following to give an overview of the research and training opportunities:

Financial support

Stipends, fellowships and assistantships from various sources are available on a competitive basis for both masters and doctoral students. Contact the Departmental Graduate Advisor to check on availability of graduate and student support.  

Accordingly, a graduate student has opportunities for excellent research training in biotechnology, molecular biology and biocomputation, veterinary bacteriology, immunology, parasitology, virology, and aquatic animal disease through concentration in Pathobiological Sciences leading to MS or PhD degrees in Veterinary Medical Sciences.
