Research:As director of the Microscopy Center I become involved in many of the
interesting research problems brought to the laboratory. This involvement
may be in the form of consultation or it may be direct participation in
the design and implementation of the investigation. My own funded research
includes a long term investigation into various aspects of the morphology
of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) and an investigation
into the interactions of several small antimicrobial peptides with both
prokaryotic and eukaryotic plasma membranes. Recent Publications:Zhu, Q., D.J. Hillmann, and W.G. Henk, 2001. The morphology the eye and surrounding structures of the bowhead whale, Balaena mysticetus. Mar. Mammal Sci. 17:729-750. Catallo, J.W., C.H. Kennedy, W. Henk, S. Barker, S. Grace, and A. Penn, 2001. Research Associate - Olga BorkhseniousM.S. 1967, Leningrad State University Ph.D.1972, USSR Academy of Sciences, Leningrad Olga is a senior microscopist with experience in operating and maintaining transmission, scanning electron microscopes, various light microscopes, and the other ancillary equipment of a centralized microscopy facility. She has considerable experience in various aspects of specimen preparation including extensive experience with immunolocalization. She regularly provides training and assistance to faculty, staff, and students in the preparation of samples and utilization of equipment. In addition, Olga teaches the laboratory portion of the graduate course (VAN 7106) in electron microscopy. Specific Areas of Technical Expertise:
