Enjoy the natural beauty of northwest Arkansas side by side with
three veterinarians in a mixed animal practice. Our practice offers
an opportunity to practice on a wide variety of species year-round.
Typically our time is divided into approximately 50% small animal,
25% cattle, and 25% horses. We deliver many puppies by caesarean
section, routinely perform orthopedic surgeries and work up
challenging medicine cases. Carroll county Arkansas is home to over
70,000 mama cows with both spring and fall calving seasons. The
equine cases consist of reproduction, lameness, lacerations, and
minor surgery. Occasionally we also examine goats, sheep, pigs, as
well as lions, tigers, and bears at a local wildlife refuge.
Students will have the opportunity to assist with emergencies if
desired, which is a great way to prepare for common after hour
emergencies before graduation. We enjoy and welcome students to
spend time learning with us. Our staff creates a fun environment and
they also enjoy working with the students we have had visit our
clinic. The St. Francis Veterinary Clinic was established in 1990 by
Dr. Ron Eby and the new hospital was opened in 2007, fully equipped
with radiograph machine, ultrasound, lab, hydraulic chute/tilt
table, and stocks. We provide ambulatory service for routine cattle
and horse work. Students are welcome to live with the families of
the veterinarians during the externship. We are happy to host
students for preceptorships, externships, or to help them explore
their options in mixed practice. Call us at (870) 423-2630 or email

Externship Program
The externship program at the Equine Specialty Hospital is designed
for third and fourth year veterinary students who wish to gain more
experience in a private practice referral setting. We encourage
students to commit 2-4 weeks to their experience. The first week
emphasizes orientation and training but students will have an
active, hands-on externship from the beginning.
Students will be assigned to a specialist for each week of their
stay. This may vary pending the case load of each specialist, and
the interests of the student (surgery vs. medicine). Professional
attire is required, and consists of a collared shirt, khaki pants,
and appropriate footwear, all in good condition. Scrubs are not
provided.
A $50 stipend is provided per week. Please note that there are no
restaurants or shopping venues within walking distance. A 2-bedroom
apartment with a private bath and small kitchen including toaster
oven and microwave is provided on-site. The apartment is available
on a first-come, first-served basis. Laundry facilities are also
available on-site. Bed linens will be provided, but students should
bring their own towels, etc. Facilities for pets are not available.
Since students are staying on the property, they are expected to
participate in all after-hours emergencies.
The closest airports are Cleveland International and Akron-Canton
Airports. However, the clinic is located 30-45 minutes from each
airport, and if flying, the student will be required to provide
rental car transportation. Students are encouraged to actively
participate in all aspects of veterinary medicine while staying at
ESH. Therefore, proof of AVMA PLIT student insurance is required.
Our caseload focuses mainly on sports medicine and the equine
athlete. However, a large number of colics, wounds, neurologic
conditions, etc are admitted on routine basis. Some cases, such as
critically ill foals, occur mainly during late spring and early
summer. The Equine Specialty Hospital also provides CT, MRI, Nuclear
Scintigraphy, and digital radiography and ultrasound capabilities.
The student is encouraged to become involved in these cases as they
arrive at the clinic.
We hope that this provides you with satisfactory information
regarding the externship offered by the Equine Specialty Hospital.
Additional questions are encouraged, and should be directed to Dr.
Melissa Milligan at (440) 834-0811, or DRMMESH@aol.com. If
interested, please send a copy of your resume, 3 references, and the
externship application to 17434 Rapids Road, Burton, OH 44021. We
will confirm your reserved externship immediately.

The Emergency Animal Clinic has a group of four 24-hour small animal
emergency hospitals in the Phoenix and surrounding area. We are a
fast-paced hospital with a large caseload and a variety of both
medical and surgical cases. We have over 20 doctors on staff and
there is always someone available for a second opinion. Despite the
pressure of emergency medicine, we offer a friendly atmosphere and
enjoy mentoring and assisting one another with challenging cases. We
have digital radiographs, ultrasound and in-house bloodwork. The
Gilbert Clinic may offer additional learning opportunities as we
have access to board-certified specialists in surgery, internal
medicine, ophthalmology, oncology, dermatology and radiology.
Despite access to board certified surgeons, our emergency doctors
perform a variety of surgeries and manage complex medicine cases.
Doctors have twice daily rounds which are a good time for externs to
learn about case management. Some of our most common surgical
emergencies include GDV’s, dystocias, pyometras, foreign bodies (gastrotomy
and enterotomy), etc. Other common emergencies include blocked cats,
diabetic ketoacidosis, pancreatitis, anemia, trauma, toxicities,
etc. We may assist with housing if desired. Our externs receive a
$100/week stipend.
