Lectures, Exams, Labs and Lab Groups

Lectures

Why lecture???? I tried not lecturing for two years and the students hated it, because they thought I was just lazy for trying to lead class discussions and not lecturing. Dr. Eilts

Exams

Lecture Exams -

The following format will be used.

Oral Exams

I tried oral exams for 3 years, but it stressed everyone out because they 'did not test well that way.' I have given up listening to complaints. All exams will be written.

Midterm Exams

For each section of the course you will have a computerized ‘self assessment’, which you must get a passing percentage of 90% in order to take the next section’s exam. The computerized ‘self assessments’ will be generated randomly for each student from a pool of questions and can be taken on any computer with internet access. You will be able to take each one as many times as you need in order for you to pass it. There will be no penalty! The subsequent section(s) will contain some comprehensive material from the previous section(s). You also must pass one comprehensive ‘self assessment’ to be eligible to take the graded final examination. The sections of the course will be General Reproduction, Equine, Small Animal, Bovine, Small Ruminant, Swine and Mastitis.

Final Exam

  • A written final examination will be given during the scheduled exam time. It will be comprehensive. It will be of the same type and content as the self evaluations, but may not be the exact same questions.

Lab Quizzes

Attendance will be taken at any time during a lab. Attendance at labs is mandatory! Missing labs and then asking to make them up later puts a strain on student numbers in other labs. Please do not ask. Missing a lab may require an oral practical on that lab topic, a paper to be written on that lab topic, or a point reduction for your final.   Failing to attend a lab may result in a one letter grade reduction in the course. A laboratory practical exam will be given for the small animal labs on 11/25/09 at 1 PM. It will be pass/fail.

Grades
  • Successful completion of all self evaluations, attendance at all the labs, and taking the final exam will result in a minimum grade of C.

  • A written, comprehensive final will be given. Grading on that final will result in a final course grade of:

    •  >90 A

    • 75 - 90 B

    • < 75 C

      • We probably will not follow the overall SVM grading policy of :

92-100 A
83-91 B
74-82 C
65-73 D
<65 F
