Hypothalamic Pituitary Axis

  • Cell nuclei in the hypothalamus have direct neural contact with the brain.
  • Releasing factors, such as GnRH, are secreted from the hypothalamus as a result of direct neural stimulation. The GnRH is released to portal vessels, which then transport it to the anterior pituitary.
  • Some cell bodies extend directly to the posterior pituitary to release oxytocin via direct neural stimulation.
