Celebrating 134 Years of Serving the Lowcountry --
Charleston County, South Carolina
A
New Era in the Journey of the Charleston Animal Society
As
we achieved the most ambitious goal in the history of
Charleston Animal Society (formerly the John Ancrum
SPCA), the completion of a new $11.2 million
state-of-the-art animal care facility including a
high-volume high-quality affordable spay/neuter clinic,
we refocus our efforts on providing the highest quality
care and opportunities to find loving homes for the
thousands of abandoned and unwanted animals who enter
our doors each year. Although we have reached a
milestone in our history, we will not rest and
rededicate every ounce of our energy to creating a
humane community where no animal is left behind.
The Charleston Animal Society
Founded in 1874, the Charleston Animal Society is a
Lowcountry institution, offering refuge and
rehabilitation to over 10,000 animals each year through
a myriad of services, including adoptions, foster care,
humane education, lost-and-found pet services, low-cost
clinics and more. A staff of 50 supported by numerous
volunteers care for homeless animals each year and
assist all of Charleston County’s residents with their
animal needs. The Society operates as a nonprofit
charitable organization, with a strong funding base. Led
by a progressive President and a seasoned Executive
Director, the Society is embarking on a historic path to
establish an adoption guarantee for each and every
healthy adoptable animal.
The Ideal Chief of Surgery and Veterinarians
The Charleston Animal Society’s Chief of Surgery will be

A
chance to be a part of history!
On
April 22, 2008, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the
Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®), in partnership with
the Charleston Animal Society, Pet Helpers and Humane
Net, will launch “ASPCA® Mission: Orange TM ” in
Charleston County, SC — a collaborative effort to create
a “humane community” by curbing the needless euthanasia
of adoptable pets through spay/neuter and adoption
initiatives. The ASPCA Mission: Orange effort, which is
taking place nationwide in partnership with select
“target” communities — including Charleston County, the
2008 Target Community — will address the animals most
at-risk (i.e. shelter animals) by including and
collaborating with leading community agencies and
organizations to implement proven strategies and tactics
in striving toward a save rate at or above 75 percent
for unwanted and abandoned animals entering shelters.
This 3-year initiative will help Charleston County meet
its goals in creating a more humane community for
animals and strive to become the first community in the
Deep South to save all adoptable animals. High quality,
high volume spay/neuter programs are efficient surgical
initiatives that meet or exceed current veterinary
medical standards of care while providing accessible,
targeted sterilization for large numbers of dogs and
cats in order to reduce their overpopulation and
subsequent euthanasia. Our new 31,000 sq. ft. animal
care facility houses a state-of-the-art surgical clinic
and will follow the Humane Alliance model. Join our team
saving thousands of animals and become a part of
history!

The USDA NAHERC program is a national animal reserve
emergency corp. that is comprised of Veterinary
Medical Officers (VMO), Animal Health Technicians and
Veterinary Medical Students (AHT) being assimilated into
an elite cadre within Emergency Management response
community.
The
National Animal Health Emergency Response Corps (NAHERC)
started in 2001 protects public health by providing a
ready reserve of private and State veterinarians and
veterinarian technicians to combat threats to U.S.
livestock and poultry in the event of a large outbreak
of an exotic or foreign animal disease. NAHERC staff can
be activated and supplement existing USDA-APHIS
employees for periods of 3 weeks for domestic
deployments or 30 days for international deployments.
These positions are paid upon activation of the NAHERC.
However, during a disaster, the size and scope of an
incident can easily overwhelm conventional local animal
health resources. The NAHERC is an Emergency Response
organization designed to provide large scale federal
assistance during an animal event. Previously NAHERC was
activated and responded to the 2001 UK FMD outbreak, the
2003 Newcastle outbreak in California and the 2002 LPAI
in Virginia. When an animal health emergency occurs, an
immediate response is necessary to protect both animals
and people in support of the National Response Plan and
Essential Support Function #11.
To
qualify, NAHERC members must meet all qualification
requirements at the time of application.

Veterinary Medical Officer - Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary
Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of
