| Laboratory Animal Medicine
Residency Program
Distinguishing Features:
The residency in laboratory animal
medicine is a three year program designed to prepare the incumbent for a
productive career in laboratory animal medicine, to partially fulfill the requirements for board eligibility of the
American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), and to fulfill the requirements
for a M.S. degree. He/she will participate in the clinical practice of
laboratory animal medicine and in the instructional program on a full-time
basis. Residents rotate through the Veterinary School and University
vivaria, two human medical research facilities, and one of two primate
centers. Time will be scheduled for didactic instruction, rounds, seminars,
guided self-study, and participation in biomedical research. Enrollment in up to
eight (regular session) or five (summer session) credit hours of graduate academic
studies per semester will be scheduled.
Each year the appointment will be
reviewed, with reappointment contingent upon satisfactory completion of the
previous year's program.
Requirements:
D.V.M. or its equivalent.
Completion of the National Board
Examination and a State Board of Veterinary Medicine examination.
Academic qualifications acceptable
for admission to the LSU Graduate School.
Salary:
$30,000/year, with $750 annual increase.
Functions and Duties:
Participate in clinical and
diagnostic laboratory animal medicine service under the supervision of a
board-certified laboratory animal clinician.
Participate in the didactic and
tutorial instructional programs of the School of Veterinary Medicine.
Residents will
complete a M.S. degree in any area of science, preferably Pathology.
Students may elect to work with a mentor from the School of Veterinary Medicine,
LSU-Main Campus, or Pennington Biomedical Research Center.
