LSU Protocol for Animal Care and Use

The LSU Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) requests that all principal investigators wishing to use animals for research and teaching purposes on the LSU campus, or in field studies use the LSU Protocol for Animal Care and Use form to request use of these animals.

When does the Animal Care and Use Protocol need to be reviewed by the IACUC?  1) Funds are currently available for this project, and there is no associate grant. 2) Funds are currently available or have been approved for this project, and a copy of the grant is attached for congruency check. 3) The corresponding grant has been approved for funding, and a copy of the grant is attached for congruency check.  4) The funding agency requires pre-approval of an animal care and use protocol.  A copy of the grant is attached for congruency check.  5) When the corresponding grant application is funded. The PI is required to notify IACUC, and provide a copy of the grant.  Please note that the protocol and the grant must be evaluated by an IACUC representative for congruency before the protocol can be approved.  It is the principal investigator's responsibility to ensure that the IACUC has a copy of the grant when it is funded.

The following is also required for review.  1) Submit proof of approval from the Inter-institutional Biological and Recombinant DNA Safety Committee (IBRDSC) if using biological or recombinant DNA.  A biosafety precautions door posting form for the animal room is also required.  2) If using hazardous chemicals, proof of approval from the chemical safety manager is required as well. 3) If you are conducting a field study using exotic or native wildlife, include a copy of your animal permits with your protocol submission.
