Black-shouldered Kite (Elanus caeruleus)
  • Diet: small mammals
  • Habitat: open fields or prairies
  • Range in Louisiana: southernmost one-third of the state
  • Abundance: rare year round
  • Comments:

Mississippi Kite (Ictinia mississippiensis)

  • Diet: large insects, carrion, and small birds
  • Habitat: open and barren with scattered trees
  • Range in Louisiana: can be found in all parishes
  • Abundance: common in the summer and during migrations
  • Comments:

American Swallow-tailed Kite (Elanoides forficatus)

  • Diet: large insects, reptiles, amphibians, and bird nestlings
  • Habitat: lowland cypress swamps and tall riverine woodlands
  • Range in Louisiana: the Florida and surrounding parishes; also Atchafalaya basin
  • Abundance: rare during the spring and summer
  • Comments:

Northern Goshawk (Accipiter gentilis)

  • Diet: large birds and large mammals
  • Habitat: woodland
  • Range in Louisiana:
  • Abundance: winter vagrant
  • Comments: only one record in Louisiana

Sharp-shinned Hawk (Accipiter striatus)

  • Diet: mostly small birds supplemented with small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and insects

  • Abundance: common during migrations, uncommon in summer and winter

Cooper’s Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)

  • Diet: mostly small birds; occasionally small mammals and reptiles
  • Habitat: mixed and coniferous forests
