Veterinary Teaching Hospital

The School of Veterinary Medicine provides veterinary care to animal patients through its Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH). Both primary care clinics and a referral practice provide case material for the instruction of professional students and post-DVM, interns and residents. The VTH operates as a fee-for-service enterprise of the School of Veterinary Medicine. The fees generated provide most of the hospital operating budget.

The VTH annually treats over 20,000 patients per year and serves as the primary referral center of veterinarians in Louisiana. Approximately 65 percent of the total cases are referral cases from regional practicing veterinarians in Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and Arkansas.

Major goals of the VTH are:

1. Provide the widest possible clinical case experience necessary to train Veterinary Medical students, residents, interns and practicing veterinarians in quality veterinary medicine;

2. Serve as a referral resource for practicing veterinarians in Louisiana and surrounding states;

3. Provide a clinical laboratory for all departments within the School of Veterinary Medicine to meet their teaching, service and research roles; and

4. To maintain a nationally recognized clinical program.

The hospital operation is supported by approximately 67 support staff, 50 faculty, 28 house officers, and 35 student workers. The hospital is divided into the Small Animal Clinic, Large Animal Clinic, Ancillary Services and Support Areas.

The hospital faculty are highly trained and skilled professionals who are certified specialists by the following AVMA recognized Specialty Boards: Board of Practitioners (avian, Equine, Food animal); Toxicology, Laboratory Animal Medicine; Theriogenology; Dermatology; Internal Medicine; Cardiology; Oncology; Pathology; Clinical Pathology; Radiology; Radiation Oncology and Surgery.

The hours at the Hospital are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. We are available for Emergency calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

At LSU SVM, we are committed to giving your pets the best possible care, but please be aware that our veterinarians cannot answer questions, either by phone or e-mail, about animals they have never examined. This means that our clinicians must actually see your pet and run any necessary tests to thoroughly evaluate its condition and recommend a course of treatment. They will also be glad to consult with your veterinarian and take the animal on referral if you wish. If you would like your pet to be seen by one of our specialists, please have your veterinarian phone the Small Animal Clinic (dogs, cats, birds, exotics) at 225-578-9600, or the Large Animal Clinic (horses, farm animals) at 225-578-9500, to set up a referral, or you may phone for an appointment yourself.
